When I got into freelance writing in 2011, I saw several options for running the business, from inbound marketing (building your brand to attract clients) to outbound (actively going after clients) and to jostling for existing jobs (applying on job sites and bidding on freelancing sites).

The third option was a No-No, according to those I was following, while they mentioned the first one as the best way.

But inbound marketing isn’t small work; it involves marketing oneself by blogging, social media, and most importantly guest blogging. But these also involve a lot of patience.

So…a lot of work yet a lot of patience. Wow! (Now I’m wondering what made me choose that option.)

I didn’t have the time to do all these – I was in school. Final year for that matter.

And because I wasn’t confident is sales, I didn’t go for outbound marketing. I’d have to talk to hundreds of clients every week and expect less than 1 percent to say YES.

As for me, I was floating poorly between options 1 and 2.

Fast forward to 2017, I learnt that to succeed as a freelance writer, your marketing must be some sort of hybrid: a creative combination of inbound and outbound.

Yes, I still had to approach prospective clients to offer my writing services, but this time around, I was going armed with irresistible credibility…I was approaching them as an authority.
